The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

Assignment: Choose a passage from "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," write out the passage; explain what it means and why you chose it.

“One might generalize by saying: the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from the domain of tradition. By making many reproductions it substitutes a plurality of copies for a unique existence. And in permitting the reproduction to meet the beholder or listener in his own particular situation, it reactivates the object reproduced. These two processes lead to a tremendous shattering of tradition which is the obverse of the contemporary crisis and renewal of mankind. Both processes are intimately connected with the contemporary mass movements. Their most powerful agent is the film. Its social significance, particularly in its most positive form, is inconceivable without its destructive, cathartic aspect, that is, the liquidation of the traditional value of the cultural heritage (p. 221).”

Why I chose it:

I chose this passage because the words hit the nail of the matter on the head in relation to reproducing work of art in age of mechanization. This passage also show how arts relates to culture, religion, social life, economics and politics. In terms of Age of Mechanical Reproduction, works of Art can be mass produce for economic gain or capitalistic motives thereby destroying the emotions the time and space of the original copy.

What it means:

It is common knowledge that mass mechanical reproduction of work of Art sometimes destroys the value or worth of the original art work( be it music, painting, photo, fashion, literary work and film). Also, in the process of mass mechanical reproduction new experience and new consciousness is generated along the line to meet individual in their particular situation or experience.   There can be little or more variations incorporated into the work of art which could either diminish the value or add to it. It could create another meaning into it or start a whole ideology or philosophy different from the original artist's idea or believes and this could shatter traditions. Mechanical reproduction will bring about a break away from the rituals of originality, culture, politics and norms to introduce new experience, language, culture and norms; in fact a movement that the whole world will embrace.  So it could develop into mass movement in positive form just like the painting of Mona Lisa. I' am loving it and will post this passage in my room!  I appreciate this class for exposing or teaching me this aspect of philosophy or knowledge.
